Air force (X & Y)

Indian Air Force Group X Exam is conducted for technical and non technical airmen vacancies in the force. The Central Airmen Selection Board (CASB) is tasked with the responsibility of selection and enrollment. CASB has 14 airmen selection centers located all over India. Candidates who clear this exam are first required to undergo 12 weeks of Joint Basic Phase Training at Basic Training Institute Belgaum (Karnataka). After successful completion of JBPT candidates are allotted trades and then provided trade specific training. On completion of trade specific training airmen are deployed for ground based duties as per their trade.​

About Air Force Group “X & Y”
The Indian Air Force recruits candidate as Airmen in 2 fields one is group ‘X’ and other group ‘Y’.
Eligibility Criteria of Group X 
GROUP ‘X’ Trades (Except Education Instructor)
Note: The upper age limit on date of enrolment is 21 years.
Age : 17- 21 Years
Education Qualification :

Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English. (or)
Passed 3 years Diploma Course in Engineering in any stream, as shown below, from a Government recognized Polytechnic Institute with 50% marks in aggregate, and 50% marks in English in Diploma or in Intermediate/Matriculation, if English is not a subject in Diploma Course.
GROUP ‘X’: Education Instructor Trade
Age : 20 – 25 Years
Education Qualification :
(i) BA with English as one the subjects or B.Sc with Physics/ Psychology/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ IT / Computer Science/ Statistics as one of the subjects or BCA with minimum 50% marks.
(ii) B.Ed degree with minimum of 50% marks from a Government recognized institute.
(iii) Graduation and B.Ed programmes should be recognized by UGC/ NCTE/ Competent accreditation authority.
Age : 20 – 28 Years
Education Qualification :
(i) MA in English/ Psychology or M.Sc in Mathematics/ Physics/ Statistics/ Computer Science/ IT or MCA with 50% marks.
(ii) B.Ed degree with minimum of 50% marks from a government recognized institute.
(iii) Graduation, Post-Graduation and B.Ed programmes should be recognized by UGC/ NCTE/ Competent accreditation authority.
Physical & Medical Standards :
To get selected as an Airman, the candidate must be physically and mentally FIT to perform duties in any part of the world, climate and terrain.

Exam will be in three successive phases :

  1. (a) Phase-I Online Test

  2. (b) Phase-II Physical Fitness Test, AT-I and AT-II Test

  3. (c) Phase-III Medical Fitness Test

The Online Test {For both Group ‘ X’ Trades (except Education Instructor Trade)} . The candidates are to qualify in each paper separately in their respective groups. The IAF Airmen Online Test is as follows:

Group ‘X’ Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 60 minutes and will comprise of English, Physics, and Mathematics as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus.

Group ‘X & Y’ Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 85 minutes and will comprise of English, Physics, and Mathematics as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA).

Indian Air Force Airmen Physical Exam :

The candidates who pass the online test will be called at the designated Airmen Selection Centre for Physical Fitness Test (PFT) which would consist of 1.6 Km run to be completed within 06 minutes and 30 seconds. Candidates will also have to complete 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and 20 squats within the stipulated time to qualify for the Physical Fitness Test.

Note: Candidates are advised to bring their sports shoes and shorts/Track pants.

Adaptability Test 1: All candidates who pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will have to undertake Adaptability Test-1 (objective type written test) which is to assess the suitability of a candidate for employment in the IAF which involves deployment in varied geographic terrain, weather and operational conditions.

Adaptability Test 2: All candidates who pass Adaptability Test -1 will have to undertake Adaptability Test-2 as per policy in vogue. Adaptability Test-2 is to select candidates who can adapt to the environment of Indian Air Force and are able to adjust to the military way of life.

Age : 17- 21 Years

Educational Qualification :

Should have passed Class 10 + 2/Intermediate/Equivalent exam from an education board / Institute listed in Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE) website as members, in any stream/subjects with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English as per the mark sheet of Class 10 + 2 / Intermediate /Equivalent exam.
GROUP ‘Y: Med Asst Trade
Age : 17- 21 Years

Educational Qualification :

Passed 10+2 / Intermediate / equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate, and 50% marks in English.
GROUP ‘Y’: Musician Trade
Age :17 – 25 Years

Educational Qualification :

Passed Matriculation /10th class or equivalent with minimum pass marks from any Government recognised School/Boards and should be proficient in playing at least one of the following musical instruments: Trumpet / Bass / Violin / Saxophone / Clarinet / Euphonium / Jazz-Drum / Piccolo / Bass Trombone / Key Board / Guitar / Sarod / Viola / Cello / Contra Bass (String Bass).

  5. Group ‘Y’ {Except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P), IAF(S) and Musician} Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 45 minutes and will comprise of English as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA).

  6. Group ‘Y’ Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 85 minutes and will comprise of English, Physics, and Mathematics as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA).
