About NDA :

The National Defense Academy (NDA) is a leading joint training institution and a center of excellence for junior officers of the Indian Armed Forces. The NDA Test is administered for the induction of Army, Navy, and Air Force applicants at the NDA (National Defense Academy) and Naval Academy.

The NDA test helps in filtering the candidates that will be perfect to lead Indian armies in the future. This entrance test is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, twice a year, in March and August. To become a part of the services the candidate must be unmarried and male. After joining the NDA, every junior officer is trained in the National Defence Academy for three years, where at the end they receive a B.A/B.Sc. or B. Sc. (Computer Science) degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. The curriculum followed throughout this three-year training program comprises both physical and mental education where apart from regular classes the officers are trained in outdoor skills like PT, games, and drills. 

The overall development of the officer is the prime focus of NDA and hence, character building, esprit-de-corps, mental and physical robustness, leadership, and a sense of keen observation are all a part of the training. The whole NDA campus is built to cater to all the infrastructural requirements to support such a dynamic education system. Equipped with labs, two Olympic size swimming pools, a Gymnasium, 32 football grounds, polo grounds, a cricket stadium, and many squash and tennis courts, it is the best place to train future army officers. The three-year training is divided into 6 terms, each year comprising two, one called spring term (Jan to May) and the other known as the autumn term (July to Dec).

Eligibility Criteria :

(a) A candidate must be a male 

b) regarding nationality must be :

(i) a citizen of India, or

(ii) a subject of Bhutan, or

(iii) a subject of Nepal, or

(iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 to permanently settle in India, or

(v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Malawi, and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam intending to permanently settle in India.​

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv), and (v) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

A certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Age: They must be between 16 ½ to 19 years on January 1st or July 1st of the year after the year of the exam. The commission will accept the date of birth that is entered in Class 10 or 12 certificates.

Marital Status: You should be unmarried.

Educational Qualifications :

(i) For Army wing of National Defence Academy: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.​

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under 10+2 Pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

Physical Standards :

(a) The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties.

(b) There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects, or underweight. The Candidate should not be overweight or obese.

(c) The minimum acceptable height is 157 cms(162.5 cms. for the Air Force). For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern regions of India, Garhwal, and Kumaon, the minimum acceptable heights will be 5 cms. less. In the case of candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms.

Selection Procedure :

NDA Exam has Two Stages.

  1. Written 

  2. Interview

Written: The exam will constitute 2 subjects, Maths and General Ability Test, and each subject is given the time limit of 2 ½ Hours, maximum marks for Maths is 300 & General ability is 600. The papers in all the subjects will consist of MCQ questions only. The question papers of Mathematics & Part B of General Ability Test will be set in Hindi as well as in English. The Commission fixes qualifying marks in any or all the subjects at the examination.

​Interview: Qualified candidates in the written examination will be called for an Interview conducted by SSB (Services selection board). For Army, Navy Wings & 10 +2 Entry Scheme candidates need to undergo Intelligence Test & Personality Test, but for Air Force Wing the candidates must attend a Pilot Aptitude Test.

Intelligence and Personality Test:

The SSB procedure consists of a two-stage Selection process-stage I and stage II. Only those candidates who clear stage I are permitted to appear for stage II. The details are :

  1. Stage I comprises Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on a combination of performance in the QIR Test and PP and DT.

  2. Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. the Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and the Psychologist. There is no separate weightage for each test. The marks are allotted by assessors. Besides, marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the candidate in the three techniques and decisions of the Board. Every test has equal weightage.

Syllabus of NDA Written Exam

There are two written exams that will be conducted the same day. One will appear for the Mathematics paper and GAT (General Ability Test) etc. Here is the syllabus that one has to prepare for this:

Note:

  • The paper in the entire subject consists of objective type questions only.
  • For Mathematics, One will be given 2.5 marks for each correct answer.
  • For GAT, One will be given 4 marks for each correct answer.
  • There would be negative marking as well, 33% marks will be deducted for each wrong response.

The Written Exam is for 900 marks, One will need to score very well in order to qualify for the SSB Interview. The SSB Interview is also for 900 marks. After the Written Exam, SSB Interview and Medical Exam. All India Merit List will be made on the basis of the marks scored out of 1800 (Written Exam and SSB Interview).

The examination Minimum qualifying standard approved at the written stage 280 of 900 marks expected (with at least 25-30% marks in each subject Marks secured by the last finally recommended candidate 650 of 1800 marks expected.
